Head Torches: Illuminating the Way by Nick Gent
The head torch is one of the most practical and helpful inventions of our time. It has permanently transformed many hobbies and industries, maximizing efficiency and lowering the incidence of error and injury.
The very first battery operated, head mounted portable light was specifically designed for miners, who routinely risked life and limb during the course of their work. The combustible and noxious gases that could unexpectedly surface in mine shafts posed a deadly hazard when exposed to the open lamps that were the only source of light to miners at that time. The battery powered head mounted lamp greatly reduced the threat of explosions because there was no open flame. Productivity increased as well, because the miners did not have to periodically stop working in order to move lamps down the passages.
Another industry that truly benefits from utilizing head torches in the course of duty is the health care industry. In surgery, the ability to clearly and easily see every minute detail substantially reduces the margin for error, thus increasing the rate of successful procedures. Dentists are now able to take much better care of their patients' teeth because the dark areas of the mouth can be illuminated as needed without interrupting the use of either hand.
Electricians, mechanics and plumbers no longer need to ask other people to lend a hand by shining torches into dark cramped spaces so that they can complete their work in a timely manner. The use of head torches allows such tradesmen to control and direct light even more accurately than they could with the help of assistants. The full use of both hands allows them to accomplish their tasks with a minimum of disruption.
Caving, rock climbing, camping, hunting and night fishing are just a few of the popular recreational hobbies that rely heavily on the utilization of head torches. Navigating deep, dark caves and mountainsides requires the full use of both hands in order to move about easily and safely, enabling the climber to react and respond swiftly to any unexpected and hazardous situations that may arise.
Camping in the big outdoors poses many challenges, one of which is lack of light once the sun sets. Preparing a campfire, cooking dinner, changing clothes and answering the call of nature are just a few of the many evening activities that require both hands and illumination to be performed effectively and efficiently.
Hunters depend on head torches to illuminate their way through the woods at night so that they can carry their guns and hunting gear more comfortably. Head torches also greatly diminish the possibility of accidentally dropping something or walking into a tree.
Night fishing would be much less enjoyable and much more frustrating without head torches. Tying lures and retrieving caught fish necessitate the use of both hands. Hand held flashlights are clumsy for such tasks, as they either need to be held or placed in such a way that they can properly illuminate the task at hand and not shift or roll away. Lamps that can be set down often cannot provide the strength and intensity of illumination required to complete such tasks without fumbling or eye strain.
Head torches are now being made with different and specific features and controls, according to the types of tasks they are needed to help accomplish. Like other technologies that could not have even been imagined in the not so distant past, including airplanes, telephones and the Internet, life without head torches for those that rely on them must be unimaginable.
