Misconceptions About Belly Dancers
Belly dance is still widely misinterpreted in the US today. I invite you to attend a belly dance class and see how it empowers women. Bellydancers report increased self-esteem, better body image and greater confidence. But I have to say, I think some belly dance instructors are going too far in emphasizing that aspect of belly dance above all else.
Many belly dancers today will tell you belly dancing is a dance style meant to be performed by women, amongst women. What nonsense!
There is no denying a good belly dancer can be deliciously sexy. Womanly, usually curvaceous, in a glittering costume that shows off all her best features, her every move sensual - what man wouldn't be spellbound? Why shouldn't a woman be proud of captivating every man in the room?
It's a sad fact that, in the countries where belly dance originated, the 'myth' of bellydance as women of easy virtue is no misconception. In Turkey, there are clubs where patrons can 'visit' the dancers at the end of the evening. In Egypt, some belly dancers retire very wealthy, thanks to the generous 'sponsors' they garnered during their career. These days, belly dance has such a bad reputation in Egypt it's unusual to see a native Egyptian professional dancer. Foreign dancers who come to Egypt in search of 'authenticity', can get a nasty shock when men proposition them after the show.
So it's not surprising if Western belly dancers seek to distance themselves from the Middle Eastern reality, by trying to elevate the Danse Orientale to a higher plane and why not?
Let's face it, even though their moves are sensual, belly dancers wear more than the average woman on the beach these days.Bellydancing is nowhere near risque enough to satisfy that end of the market in today's Western society. While some tribal fusion belly dancerscombine belly dancing and burlesque, the overwhelming majority of belly dancers outside the Middle East are respectable cabaret performers or teachers.

You should go hunting around sports shops but the only protection I know of is shoulder pads, sorry!
